Frozen potato/cheese pierogies are a regular dinnertime dish at our house. Mr Plain is a big fan of them.  I have never made them from scratch, but, we have eaten them fresh from restaurants and our local farmers market.  He tells that mine are better.

Yes, the frozen ones from the package. To each his own, right?

Well, I prefer the fresh, but, until fresh are made in my kitchen, which may not be happening too soon, the frozen will have to do. 😉

What you need for this recipe and a few notes:

  • Frozen pierogies: Our pierogi flavor of choice is usually a cheddar/potato variety. But, any flavor will work..go with your favorite!
  • You don’t have to defrost the pierogi before adding them to the casserole. Taking them frozen, right from the bag is fine.
  • Bacon: You can cheat a little and use bacon bits instead of baking and then, crumbling the bacon. Saves you a step and a little time.
  • 8 x 8 baking dish
  • Cream cheese: Save a few calories and go with the 1/3 fat free version!
  • Chicken broth
  • Cheddar cheese.
  • Green onions: these are optional, but, do add a nice flavor to the casserole.

This casserole gives regular frozen {or fresh} pierogies a little extra pizazz! It’s pierogies, cheese, more cheese and bacon! And isn’t everything a little better with cheese and bacon?

  1. I'll have to try this! I don't usually make baked pasta dishes, but just putting frozen pasta in a dish wouldn't be that bad!

  2. I want to try this but where do i get frozen pierogis from xxx

    1. In the frozen dinner section at your local grocery store. There called Mrs. T's Pierogies.

  6. I just made this for my family and it was a huge hit! Now one of my favorite dishes!

  7. It's great! Pretty easy and so delicious! Thanks for this recipe!

  8. I made this the other night for my husband and I and I followed the recipe completely. We both really loved this dish but I had to bake it in an 8×8 dish because there was not nearly enough Pierogi's to fill the bottom of a 9×13 pan. Not quite sure what happened – has anyone else had this issue??
I will be making this again for sure but next time I will probably double the recipe so it fits into a 9×13 dish.

    1. @Anonymous,
The recipe is for an 8×8 dish. When I need to use a 9×13, I double the recipe! This is my POLISH family’s favorite dish!

  9. @Anon743P..I'm so sorry that you had a problem, I haven't heard any similar issues with it. The only thing that I can think of is possibly a size difference with the pierogis? I am glad your family liked them..please let me know if you have any other questions!

  10. Making this as I type! I doubled the recipe for my family of 6. We are not big Bacon people (crazy I know) so I'm using an 8oz bag of diced ham, and putting with the dish to bake. Can't wait to try it! Thanks for the recipe!

  11. Made it for our Saturday guys' dinner and it was guy approved! I used bacon pieces rather than frying fresh bacon. I also doubled the recipe. Thanks!

  12. Great recipe, try making the sauce on the bacon fat for some extra bacony goodness, also Pierogi is already plural, no need for an 's'!

  13. I made it tonight and it was gone in five minutes! They loved it!

  14. This is literally the best cassarole I have ever had. Next time I making it, I am making two of them. We ate it in record time!

  15. About how many servings approximently? I want to take this for Christmas Eve to our family get-together, but I have a feeling I'm going to have to double it. This looks delicious! Thanks for sharing.

    1. Hi Bethany- This serves about 4 adults, so, if you are feeding a big crowd, doubling it would be a good idea. Enjoy 🙂

  16. Made this last week with some leftover spiral ham instead of the bacon–was a big hit. My hubby had never had pierogis before and he loved it–so much so that he asked me to make it again this wee!. This time I'm trying it with chicken (since that's what I have). Can't wait to try it!

    1. What a great way to use the leftover ham! Let me know how the chicken goes..we love chicken around here and I 'm always looking for new chicken recipes 🙂 Glad you enjoyed it..thank you!

    2. The chicken was great! Tonight we will be having it with bacon. Can't wait!

  17. I don't have cream cheese is there something I could use instead? Or just the broth?

    1. I wouldn't skip the cream cheese, it adds a creamy texture to the dish. A similar cheese may work, but, I haven't experimented with anything else though..sorry!

    2. A little late in seeing this, but I'm wondering if a cream soup would work (cream of chicken seems like a possibility)?

    3. It may work, you may need to use a bit of broth or water with it to thin it out just a smidgen. The condensed may be too overly thick on its own.

  18. It's is such a high cholesterol recipe I want to try it but I will alter it by adding fresh asparagus and turkey bacon, then add 2000mg of fish oil to that nights supplements

  19. I made these about a month ago, my husband requested them again tonight! They are amazing!!

  20. Wondering what I could use instead of the chicken broth, I have a poultry allergy.

    1. I haven't tried this recipe (about to make it actually) but I know whenever I am out of chicken broth, a vegitable broth also does the trick, and even though it would change the flavor slightly, you could do a beef. Sounds like the chicken broth is used for thinning out the cream cheese and while adding flavor, could get substituted.

  21. Hi,

Thanks, I was actually just think about using a veggie broth in place of the chicken.

  22. Could I make this in the slow cooker I wonder? I have a teachers'potluck this week and this would be perfect…

    1. You probably could, I haven't tried it in the slow cooker yet. If you do..please let me know..I love cooking in mine 🙂

    2. I did try it and it worked out great! I put onions on the bottom, and then some chicken brests I needed to use up, the perogies on top (frozen) and poured the sauce over and googled some other recipes for the approximate time and put it on high for around 3 hours and a bit – yum!!

    3. Yay! That's great! I am always looking for easy meals to toss in my crock pot 🙂 Thank you so much for letting me know.

  23. O.M.G. and that's what's for dinner tonight!!! But the calories???? I'll diet tomorrow 🙂

  24. I'm going to be making this tonight. I will alter it a bit. I will be adding in onion and garlic (We are huge fans of onions and garlic) And I will also be adding ham since that is what I have and bacon is so expensive. I got a really good deal on ham at Sam's Club the other day. So now I have 4 ham stakes in my freezer waiting to be used.

  25. This was awesome!! Had my parents and brother over for dinner so I doubled the recipe and it vanished very quickly.

    1. Yay! So glad it was a hit! Thanks for stopping by and letting me know.

  26. Made this for dinner last night and my husband loved it. Thanks for sharing this very easy but great tasting recipe.

    1. I'm so glad you and your husband enjoyed it Dawn! Thank you so much for letting me know 🙂

  27. This was an amazing dish that hubby and I really enjoyed and, oh, so easy to make too! I used
nine slices of bacon instead of three and hubby thought I should use more next time. Thanks for sharing!

    1. A little more bacon is always good 😉 So glad you enjoyed it..thanks for letting me know!

  28. Very good! I doubled the sauce & added little cocktail hotdogs instead of bacon. Turned out great!

  29. I will be making this real soon we love Pierogies at our house my Husband got me started on them this is what he does is lots of onions cut into rings and cooks them down with lots of butter then puts in some kielbasa and cooks it for a while then puts in the Rierogies and cooks it for a while then when all done puts it on the plate and puts on some sour cream and boy are they good but filling.

  31. Hi Dallas! I have never used the sour cream, but, it should be ok. I would cut back on chicken broth a little. The sour cream will be a bit more liquidity.

  32. I assume you’re using Mrs. T’s frozen Pierogi, which come 12 in a box. How can this serve 6 people, unless you’re using this as an appetizer or a side-dish? Two Pierogi per person does not a meal make! Nevertheless, I used Spinach & Feta Pierogi, and they were great! We enjoyed them with a tossed salad.

    1. Any brand of frozen pierogi will work, so, the amount in a box can vary. However, yes, if only 12 are available, the serving size would be less. I made the change. Thanks for the heads up and glad you liked them!

Great recipe! Fits my criteria…. easy, common ingredients and delicious! Thanks for a great recipe!

  34. This didn’t turn out well at all. I followed the directions and it wasn’t cooked through after 20 minutes. I ended up finishing it in the microwave because the rest of dinner was ready. It also needed more sauce because it was very dry. If I try this again I’ll triple the sauce and double the cooking time because it did taste good.

    1. Thanks for the feedback! Let me know how it works if you try it again 🙂

      1. I couldn’t even get to the recipe because of all the ads and pop ups. What a waste of time. I’m blocking this site.

        1. That’s too bad Andrew..there is tons of great recipe on this site and they are FREE for everyone on the internet! Hence, the need for ads, because, well, the ingredients to make pierogi casserole aren’t free and I’m not independently wealthy 😉 Have a lovely day.

  35. The last time I made this the cream cheese looked curdled, almost like cottage cheese, how can I prevent this from happening again?

    1. Hi Melinda- I can’t say for certain what happened, but, it sounds like be that your cheese wasn’t fully melted. Perhaps, heat it a few minutes longer ( stirring frequently) and see if that helps. Hope it works out 🙂

My husband is a bit of a picky eater so sometimes I have a hard time coming up with different meals. I have made this SEVERAL times and it turns out great everytime! My husband loves it and the meal is devoured!!

    1. That’s awesome Megan! I have a few of those picky eaters at my house too. I know how good it feels to find something like enjoy 🙂 Thanks for the feedback!

I have come back to this recipe so many times! The kids love it and I love that we always have pierogies in the freezer and this just a no-brainer. I wanted to let you know that I toss the sauce ingredients into a cup, whiz them with the hand blender and chuck it in the oven. Turns out amazingly with even less prep! Thanks for the inspiration!

  38. Wondering if this meal freezes well, like if I made 3 portions and we ate one, could I freeze the two other portions for future meals?

  39. Made this NYE. The only changes I made were to double bacon and pierogi, increase the low fat cream cheese to 1 and 1/2 pkgs and increase cheddar cheese to 1 and 1/4 cups.
This was a hit! Thanks for a great recipe!

I made this into a one dish meal by adding 4 shredded chicken thighs and the bacon in the cheese and chicken broth mixture. We topped with fresh chives and sour cream. AMAZING comfort food!

  42. 5 stars
I Made this and it was delicious… the only problem I had was that I apparently didn’t use a big enough baking dish
I also layered the pierogi’s with kielbasa

Erin, this recipe is in my family’s Top Five Family Favourites! I have shared the link with friends, colleagues, and even families that I have worked with over the years. It is so easy, we generally have everything on hand, and it is my “go to” when my get up and go has got up and gone! (Physically or mental health wise)

Ha ha ha since I only “make” sons I generally DOUBLE the recipe … and rarely have leftovers.

Thank you for this recipe; it truly is a lifesaver 🥰
