Dinty Moore Beef Stew Recipe Ingredients

  • Beef. The beef is the star of the show and the source of the dish’s signature meatiness. Look for a cut of beef with a high-fat content when making the stew, as this will aid in maintaining the stew’s moisture and flavor. Use a beef cut that lends itself well to stewing, like chuck roast. Beef stock can be substituted with water for a heartier and tastier stew.
  • Carrots. The stew would be bland without the sweetness and crunchiness that carrots bring. To choose the best carrots, look for ones that are firm and have a vivid hue. Before adding them to the stew, cut them into bite-sized pieces.
  • Celery. There’s a hint of earthiness from the celery in the stew that’s really nice. Select celery with stalks that are both firm and crunchy. Prepare the celery for the stew by chopping it into small pieces.
  • Potatoes. The potatoes give the stew a hearty, starchy consistency. If you want your potatoes to maintain their shape while cooking, use a waxy variety like red potatoes or Yukon Golds. Before adding them to the stew, cut the potatoes into small pieces.
  • Tomatoes. The tomatoes give the stew a fresh, tangy taste. If you want a more reliable texture in this dish, use canned diced tomatoes.
  • Onion. Stew gets its sweet and savory notes from the onions. For maximum flavor, use yellow or white onions in this dish. Add chopped onions to the stew.
  • Garlic. The stew gets a kick of heat and depth from the garlic. For maximum flavor, cook using fresh garlic. It’s best to mince the garlic before adding it to the stew.
  • Beef Broth. The beef broth gives the stew a deep and satisfying flavor. To reduce sodium intake, low-sodium beef broth should be used.
  • Worcestershire Sauce. The Worcestershire sauce gives the stew a distinctive flavor. It complements the steak with its subtle sweetness and savory undertones.
  • Bay Leaves. The stew takes on a faint earthy and herbal note from the bay leaves. Prior to serving, take out the bay leaves from the stew.
  • Flour. The stew is thickened with flour. Use regular flour if you want to make this.
  • Salt And Pepper. The stew is seasoned with salt and pepper. Season with salt from the sea and freshly ground black pepper for the greatest flavor.
  • Olive Oil. The vegetables are sautéed in olive oil before being added to the stew. For maximum taste, cook with extra-virgin olive oil.

How Do You Know When Beef Stew Is Done?

When the beef in a stew is soft after cooking, it’s ready. Depending on the beef cube size and the cooking temperature, this can take anything from a few hours to a whole day on the burner. Poking the beef with a fork is one way to check for doneness. When the beef can be pierced and removed easily with a fork, you know the stew is ready.

What Kind Of Beef Is Best For Beef Stew?

A chuck roast or any piece of beef with a lot of fat on it works great in a beef stew. The marbling in the beef aids in keeping it juicy and tasty even after hours in the oven. The two pounds of chuck roast cubes specified in the ingredients should do the trick.

Is It Possible To Make Beef Stew In A Slow Cooker?

A slow cooker can, indeed, be used to prepare beef stew. Because of the slow cooking time, beef stew tastes better and has more depth of flavor when cooked in a slow cooker. Adding the cubed chuck roast, vegetables, broth, and seasonings to a slow cooker is all that’s required to make beef stew in a slow cooker. The beef needs to be cooked over a low heat for 8-10 hours.

What Other Vegetables Can I Add To Dinty Moore Beef Stew?

Vegetables other than onion, garlic, carrots, celery, and potatoes can be used to the beef stew in place of those already called for in the ingredients. Mushrooms, turnips, parsnips, green beans, and even corn are all common choices. In order to prevent overcooking, add the vegetables in the final hour of cooking, and cut them into uniform sizes to ensure even cooking.

@Kim Potter, to reduce sodium, you could skip the added salt and if you have time, prepare homemade beef broth. This allows you to control the sodium content.
