  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons butter melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F and butter a baking sheet lightly.
  • In a large mixing basin, combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • Whisk together buttermilk, honey, and melted butter in a separate basin.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry components and blend with a wooden spoon.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it forms a ball.
  • Cut a cross in the top of the dough and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Bake the bread for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Allow the bread to cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • Apple And Sultana Soda Bread. In this recipe, dried apples and sultanas are added to the classic soda bread recipe to sweeten it. To enhance the sweetness, soak the apples and sultanas in apple or orange juice beforehand.
  • Lemon And Poppy Seed Soda Bread. This tweak to the basic recipe adds a citrus taste with the addition of lemon zest and poppy seeds. Dried cranberries, which are available in most grocery stores, can be added for an extra delicious touch.
  • Caraway And Cheese Soda Bread. In this variant, shredded cheddar cheese and caraway seeds give the soda bread a savory flavor. Diced jalapenos can be added for extra heat.
  • Pumpkin And Sage Soda Bread. The traditional recipe is given a new spin by incorporating the earthy flavor of sage with the sweetness of the pumpkin. For extra crunch, try mixing in some finely chopped walnuts.
  • Cheddar And Chive Soda Bread. Soda bread gets a cheesy twist with grated cheddar cheese and chopped chives in this version. Diced bacon can be added for an extra smoky touch.
  • Chocolate Chip Soda Bread. The chocolate chips in this version give the soda bread a rich flavor. For an even more delicious flavor, try adding some dried cherries or raisins.
