Ingredients

  • 12 lasagna noodles uncooked
  • 4 cups mozzarella cheese shredded and divided
  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese shredded and divided
  • ½ pound lean ground beef
  • ½ pound Italian sausage
  • 1 onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 36 ounces pasta sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • ¼ cup fresh parsley chopped
  • 1 egg beaten

Instructions

  • Warm the oven up to 350°F. Follow the steps on the package to boil lasagna noodles until they are al dente in a large pot of salted water. Remove from the pot, run cold water over it, and set it away.
  • Put the beef, sausage, onion, and garlic in a big skillet or Dutch oven. Cook them over medium-high heat until there is no more pink. Get rid of any fat.
  • Put in the tomato paste, Italian spice, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper. Mix everything together. Leave the lid off and simmer over medium heat for 5 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.
  • Put 1 and a half cups of mozzarella, ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese, ricotta, parsley, egg, and ¼ teaspoon of salt in a different bowl.
  • In a 9×13 pan or baking dish, spread out 1 cup of the meat sauce. Put three lasagna noodles on top of it. Put ⅓ of the ricotta cheese mix and 1 cup of meat sauce on top of each other. Do it twice more. Add the last three noodles and the rest of the sauce on top.
  • Put foil over it and bake for 45 minutes.
  • Take off the foil and add the last 2 ½ cups of mozzarella cheese and the last ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese. For another 15 minutes, or until toasted and bubbly, remove from the oven. If you want, you can broil for two to three minutes.
  • Before cutting, let it rest for at least 15 minutes.

Notes

  • Meat Quality: Use high-quality ground beef and Italian sausage for better flavor.
  • Sauce Simmering: Let the sauce simmer long enough to develop depth in taste.
  • Cheese Quality: Opt for fresh, high-quality cheeses. Freshly shredded mozzarella and parmesan melt better and taste fresher.
  • Noodle Preparation: Ensure the lasagna noodles are al dente – overcooking them can make them mushy in the final dish.
  • Layering: Evenly spread the layers for a consistent texture and flavor in every bite.
  • Resting Time: Allow the lasagna to rest after baking. This helps the layers set and makes it easier to cut.
  • Seasoning Adjustments: Taste and adjust the seasoning of the meat sauce and ricotta mixture as needed.
